Course Description:
English Rhetoric is an optional course for third-year English majors. The aim of this course is to offer a systematic introduction to the basic knowledge of rhetoric, current trends and new concepts in rhetoric study. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to understand the basic principles of English rhetoric; have an overview of the subjects, content and methods in rhetoric research; have knowledge of the three levels of rhetorical operations in rhetoric study; and have an awareness of the relationship between deictic meaning and implied meaning, generalization and elaboration, concision and clarity, accuracy and vagueness, congruity and coherence in rhetoric understanding. In the long run, students will be able to keep pace with the latest developments in rhetoric and its relationship with cognitive psychology, pragmatics and communicative strategies.
